Roughage forms the bases of our horses’ diet and should always be of good quality and available in sufficient quantities. In nature, horses graze for up to 18 hours a day. This keeps their relatively small stomachs filled with small quantities of feed. Applying this to modern horse care presents a great challenge, as whilst the keeping and uses of horses have changed, their digestive systems have not. They should be given frequent, small meals, predominantly consisting of roughage – and, if needed, a small amount of concentrate or supplemental feed – spread out over the course of the day.
